PTE Academic and IELTS are both accepted for Australian visas, professional registration, and university admission. They assess the same four language skills, meet the same regulatory requirements, and are recognised across the same range of accepting organisations. So how do you choose between them?
The answer is less about which test is better and more about which format, scoring approach, and practical experience suits you as a test-taker. This comparison covers the key differences in plain terms.
What each test is — a quick orientation
PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic) is fully computer-delivered and AI-scored. You complete all sections in a single sitting of approximately two to three hours. Results are returned within one to five business days. Speaking is recorded via microphone; there is no face-to-face component.
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is available in paper and computer-based formats. For Australian migration and university purposes, you sit IELTS Academic. Writing and Speaking are assessed by trained human examiners. Computer-based IELTS results are returned in three to five days; paper-based takes up to 13 days. The Speaking component is a live interview with an examiner, conducted either face-to-face or by video.

Scoring comparison
PTE and IELTS use different score scales but are treated as equivalent for Australian immigration purposes. The approximate equivalencies most commonly referenced are:
- PTE 50 ≈ IELTS 6.0 (Competent English for most skilled visas)
- PTE 58 ≈ IELTS 6.5
- PTE 65 ≈ IELTS 7.0 (Proficient English — worth 5 additional PR points)
- PTE 73 ≈ IELTS 7.5
- PTE 79 ≈ IELTS 8.0 (Superior English — worth 10 additional PR points)

Which is accepted where?
Both PTE Academic and IELTS Academic are accepted for skilled migration visas, student visas, AHPRA health professional registration, and admission at all major Australian universities. The acceptance is broadly equivalent — there is no meaningful advantage in terms of recognition.
One important exception: IELTS General Training (not Academic) is required for some temporary work visas, partner visas, and migration to certain countries. PTE Academic does not have an equivalent of the General Training module. If your visa type requires IELTS General Training, PTE is not an option.
Which test suits different candidates?
Choose PTE Academic if:
- You prefer an objective, consistent scoring system with no human examiner subjectivity
- You want fast results — PTE’s one-to-five-day turnaround is significantly faster than paper IELTS
- You are comfortable with a fully computer-delivered format and speaking into a microphone
- You respond well to the kind of short, structured tasks PTE presents (you do not need to produce extended free-form writing or conversation)
Choose IELTS Academic if:
- You prefer human assessment of your writing and speaking, with examiner judgment rather than AI scoring
- You are more comfortable in a face-to-face speaking interview than speaking alone into a microphone
- You have prepared extensively for IELTS in the past and are familiar with the format
- Your accepting organisation accepts IELTS but you want to confirm PTE is also accepted before switching
Making your decision
There is no universally correct answer. Both tests are equally valid for almost all Australian purposes. If you are undecided, the most practical approach is to sit a scored practice test for each and see which format feels more manageable given your current English level and test-taking preferences.
